Mixed results drive the need for Top Talent!
In June, Canada’s hotel industry reported its first 2026 decrease in a major KPI, with Occupancy down 3.5% YoY while ADR was up 5.4% and RevPAR was up 1.6%. And while Vancouver saw the highest ADR ever in Canada as the World Cup visited, it also saw the largest Occupancy decline (down 15.8%), likely due to FIFA’s release of 15,000 rooms back to the market in March.
In foodservice, Statistics Canada reported a continued increase in YoY growth rate, from 3.6% YoY in March to 4.9% in April and now 5.5% in May. Special foodservice continued to lead at 6.4% YoY, with Full-service close behind at 6.3% followed by Limited-service at 4.9% and Drinking Places increasing .6%. However, even with sales increasing, restauranteurs report that the challenges facing profitability remain.
Fortunately, on July 9 the CEO of Hotels Canada reported to the Financial Post that pro-Canada domestic sentiment remains strong, with 90% of Canadians planning a domestic summer trip. A further positive note came from Canada’s job gains in July with 75,000 jobs added in total, driving unemployment to its lowest level in 2 years and delivering above expectations. Employers are hiring, and with 3 months in a row showing movement in the right direction, the labour market seems to be gaining momentum, which bodes well for consumer spending.
